Hi there,

Are there people on this board who fancy one of their shirts so much that they will wear it only rarely in order to keep it in a good state?

I can imagine that some people still have their shirt of 5 years ago hanging neatly in their closet for special occassions. I can also imagine that some people like to collect very fine shirts just for the pleasure of looking at it...

Please let me know,

Mike

I don't know about shirts but I have shoes I have never worn and occasionally take out just to look at how beautiful they are.

For me it would be a mistake not to wear a shirt straight after buying it as I usually decide I prefer a different style or design pretty soon after a purchase. On the hand if I held on to it long enough my taste might return to that particular one. Having recently decided I like bright colours and big patterns and splashed out on half a dozen I now find I am wearing my old plain shirts most of the time.

White shirts - I keep those around for their simplicity, and the occasional wedding or funeral. Other than that, I am strictly utilitarian, and buy what I'll actually wear (these days, at least).

I have one white shirt that is the most expensive shirt I own. I want it to stay crisp and not risk getting stains on it, so I only wear it to black tie events.

Other than that, I think it is silly to not wear something if you bought it. I used to be scared to wear nicer clothes, now if I spill on one of my ties or shirts I'm happy because it means I get to go shopping.

OK, I'll bite. Yes, I have various shirts that I rarely wear any more because I like them too much. (This is entirely different from my habit of not opening things in the first place because doing so would ruin their prelapsarian state--this is simply insanity, but it's my insanity.)

Typically it'll be a shirt that I really love and have worn a reasonable number of times, and am worried that I'm nearing the point at which it'll start to show this publicly. I have a few wonderful bespoke shirts that I can't afford to duplicate right now that are in this category.
