My countryman, Karl Lagerfeld has made a succes for himself as a big fashion designer. He used to wear conservative suits and things but that was when he was fat! He used a fan to hide his fat face too! Now he wears a lot of desginer clothes. I don't mind designer clothes but I was wondering what others felt about his clothes? I know he has his shirts all bespoke from Hildtich and Key Paris which is a British company famous for shirts. My feeling is that he pairs a lot of ugly stuff with his bespoke shirts. If people also look at his stomach he is not good at keeping his figure. He really loves the ugly jewelry too. All his jewelry looks cheap too. My English wife is in the jewelry business and shje comments that he is more quantity over quality!

Pretty easy target...but I know we won't let him get away with his various eccentricities. There are too few freaks like him running around - look at all the boring celebrities.

No, no, no, I dont want to make fun of him. I admire him and his design talent. But I believe he is not a true eccentric. He is very fond of trends. I remember him during the 1970s where he used to wear a lot of 1800s clothes back when 1800s clothes was popular at the discotheques. I thni they called it New Romantics in English.

But I believe these trends hurt his design sense recently. Lookin at my wife's fashion magazines I believe his own sense of clothes is hurting his Chanel haute couture. I did not like the newest Chanel one bit. Ugly hooker boots (like what Karl Lagerfeld somestimes wears) and not very creative looks. In fact, everything looks like what a Mrs.Lagerfeld would wear!

He is a genius and a great man. Germans should be proud they have someone contributed someone to the world stage who doesn't emanate provinciality.

The man is a fashion genius....
We can poke fun at his looks but he has had such a great influence on fashion these last 30+ years that our remarks are a bit unjustified and narrow-minded....
Andy Warhol was also fun-looking such as John Galliano and others....
Do not judge a book by its cover...
I still hate the middle-aged man with ponytails and eventail look...

Kaiser Karl can do whatever he pleases.

He's been at it longer than anyone else (staring when he was in his early 20s in the 50s at Balmain and Patou) and has managed to stay relevant.
He designed for several now defunct couture houses in the 60s, Chloe and Fendi (up until recently) in the 70s and in 1982 took over Chanel which at 25 years I believe is the longest running stint by a single designer at label not bearing their own name.

The man is a reference.....
When the today's younsgsters and middle-aged designers will be forgotten ,he will still be at the top.....
He is not bent on shock&awe ,provocation ,provocation but pure elegance......
Unfashionable sometimes but always relevant.........

Other than in the 90s when he used pornstars at the Fendi show which made Anna Wintour get up and leave.

Me too and I love it. I wouldn't have thought Ms. Wintour was uptight enough to leave such a show.

My understanding is that he wears only dior homme suits and diesel jeans. He supposedly lost all of the weight just to fit into a hedi slimane suit, and has since written a book about weight loss (seriously).

allegedly kaiser karl became infatuated with hedi slimane and lost all his weight to fit into slimane's creations when slimane was still at dior homme - not sure if all the rumours that he also did it to woo slimane are true as well but that's what some of the gossip was at the time

some of his chanel creations are grotesque but some are genius, but then again, chanel makes something like 90% of all its money from perfume/cosmetics and accessories, not clothing, so lagerfeld is just a means of providing publicity, albeit at least one that can actually design and isn't just a creative director

The weight loss stories are true.

Cosmetic licenses and accessories are what fund money loosing RTW lines for fashion houses.

the interesting thing with chanel is that it's one of the few privately held fashion houses (held by the wertheimer family i believe) and given chanel no. 5 remains, after all these years, one of the best selling perfumes in the world, and they spend literally nothing on advertising for it, they're just raking in the money and can afford an off year here and there with the kaiser
