Must spend some time in KC in the coming months. Any recommendations on things that must be seen, restaurants that must be patronized?

One of my best friends live in KC, so I asked him about this.

He said that of points of interest he thought the foremost was the World War I Museum (aka Liberty Memorial). He said that it is the only thing of its kind (i.e., a museum specifically dedicated to WWI) in the country. There is also the Nelson Atkins Art Gallery.

As far as good restaurants go, in the Plaza area he recommended, the Capital Grille, A Classic Cup, Brio, Jardine's and the Plaza III. In the Power & Light district he recommended the Bristol and the Majestic. Not too far from the Power & Light district is Le Fou Frog, a French restaurant, as you might surmise.

let me get back to you with names, but there were 3 places that struck me - a great bar-b-que place (bryants, maybe?) a great steak place, and a great chicken place.

Jack stack, or something to that effect, for bbq. I think there's an Italian name in involved somehow. I have a distant cousin that's a city councilman in KC, Kansas. I haven't made it there yet to visit, but I've been told about the bbq.

I definitely have the WWI museum pegged as something to do.

I am across the street from Nelson Atkins, and am told that it is great.

Years ago, I drove through here on I-70 with my dad and we stopped at some tiny little BBQ shack on the fringes of downtown. Some friend of his had recommended it. It was great. Alas, none of us can remember what the hell it was.

stroud's - fried chicken, sit down resterount, really very very good. also try the cinimon rolls

Jess and Jim's - steak.

I think that all of the above are pretty well known, your hotel conceirge can guide you. Bryants is the type of place that you take some food and eat in your car. stroud's you may very well need a reservation.

Try the following places - Hereford House, Fiorella's Jack Stack, Arthur Bryant's.

Gates is an experience, but hardly a restaurant. It's more fast food, but it's an interesting place. I'll leave it at that. I prefer the food at Hereford House and Fiorella's JS.

I spent some time in the KC area and was a little skeptical about one of my co-worker's assertion that KC was the BBQ capitol of the world. After spending time and hitting up the aforementioned restaurants, it's hard to find other places better.

KC Masterpiece (same name as the BBQ sauce) has a restaurant in the area, but I'd stay away. I went there once, and wasn't impressed.

If you want to visit the largest furniture store in North America, there's the Nebraska Furniture Mart store in Kansas City. They do deliver to other states, but I'm not sure if they cover the entire contintental US.

I second the Hereford House recommendation -- they also have a more "upscale" restaurant in the train station, I forget the name off hand. I only passed through KC very briefly while on a road trip this summer. If you're into cigars, check out Outlaw Cigar. HUGE selection.

I lived there from 82 -86. Much has changed.
Plaza area is nice retail /restaurants.
Westport area college bars, ethnic restaurants.
Nelson Atkins Museum -recent renovations /expansions. Close to Art Institute and Plaza area.
Contemporary Museum on Warwick, also close to Nelson Museum
(All the above is within walking distance)

Chiefs, though not the best team -Arrowhead is fun with legendary tailgating
River north area.
Good jazz /blues clubs
"The Bottoms", alternative galleries, lofts arts district
No shortage of Bar BQ
