Just don't think a cardigan and shorts makes any sense

The look is fine, but I just don't understand why anyone would wear it. Even in a long shirt, I sweat all summer. Whether or not I wear shorts is not important. Most of my "feeling hot" is in the upper body. Am I strange in this way? Why would I choose to ventilate my legs, while putting an extra layer - no matter how thin - on top? Sorry if this has already been addressed. Sometimes these looks that are just for form but clearly lack function do not make all that much sense. I guess the response will be that at night it gets cool, and your upper body can feel the cold more easily than your legs. Well, I wish the summer nights were like that here, but maybe that is a point. I still don't see why one would choose the informality of shorts in a situation that is clearly not that stiflingly hot.

Shorts and a jacket or sweater works well when I go for early morning walks with the dog. Very functional.

I can see shorts + cardigan as practical in the situation where it is a hot day, but you are in a building that is over-air-conditioned.

I think it is useful for a spring day, when it is perfectly nice in the sun wearing a shirt and shorts, but can get a bit cold, when you go into the shadow and/or a strong wind is blowing.

This is when I wear this look most often. Spring morning with just enough breeze to cause a slight chill. I'll also sport a jacket with shorts if there is a light mist while I'm walking the dog.

I don't wear shorts in winter.

I do that in mild spring/fall weather...but I saw someone doing it when it was 100 degrees the other day and don't get it at all.

Both looks seem fine to me. I like the second look a lot.

That's quite a popular look amongst some young men and women here in Australia, too.

The thing that mystifies me, though, is why you would choose to team a scarf with a t-shirt, a pair of jeans (typically tight with a low-rise) and a pair of thongs (aka flip-flops)?!?!?

If it's cold, why are you wearing thongs on your feet?
If it's hot, why are you wearing a scarf?
