Finally, GQ has something with which I can consistently agree.

This issue probably features more skinny ties (2.5" to 3") than regular length ones (not counting ads).

They've actually been pushing slender ties for almost a year, having featured Orland Bloom in a 2.75" on the cover a few months back.

I like skinny ties more than I like Jessica Simpson. --They're certainly easier to keep clean.

I can't stand skinny ties. Maybe it's because I am thin also. I think they look poor on thin people. And too much of an "FBI Agent" look for my taste. Too conservative and 50's, IMHO. That's just my own personal, subjective opinion however.

Every designer is pushing the skinny tie. Costume National summer 2006 show in milan a few days ago featured skinny squared ties, very 50s look. Not really my thing either. I was pretty disappointed with the whole set. :/

HL ties are skinny, as well as Dior Homme.

Jessica Simpson has a masculine face. Certainly no Britney.

Linux Pro: Odd, most people say that skinny folks should wear skinny ties. Anyway, I rather like the 50s FBI G-man look -- well, not the sack suits, but skinny ties and spartan black-and-white color scheme.

I used to sport the black-and-white G-Man look a bit, but that was before the whole "Will Smith chasing aliens" thing. Annoying. I just couldn't do that now, not with a straight face.

Lately, I'm getting more into big fat paislies and regimentals. You pair that up with a nice Italian pinstripe 2-button SB, or the mixed-match flat-fronted trouser and beige dinner blazer, with a pair of pimped-out wingtips or monkstraps, and now you're talking.. Heh heh. I don't know what they do in fashion shows, but I know I've been picking up the ladies no prob with ensembles like that lately. Ha ha ha ha ha..

My favorite outfit lately has been a pair of surf trunks and sandals (no socks) with a dress shirt (french cuff), regimental tie, and my Brooks Brothers / Loro Piana 2-button SB navy blazer. Now that is hoppin'..

Where did you learn to talk like this? Have you been watching too much MTV lately?

That's gay.... Not that there's anything wrong with that...

I agree that this is where the look originated, but I like the fact that Quentin Tarantino turned it on its ear in films like Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction by having the hip gangsters sport that look instead of the uptight G-Men (and a precursor to that was The Blues Brothers).  It then swung back the other way with Men In Black.  I don't think I could pull the look off (although I do think it looks cool), if for no other reason than, due to its history in the movies, it looks like a costume.

As for skinny ties in general, they're not really for me (but I don't like really fat ties, either).

Edited for using "it's" instead of "its."  I hate it when I do that.

Maybe I'm way off here, but when I think of skinny ties and black suits I think of the jazz musicians of the 50's and 60's...who are some of the coolest guys and best dressers of all time (at least in my opinion).
