I'm sure this so-called judge feels persecuted and is standing on principle here. However, I doubt even a first-year law student would see $54 million worth of recompense, particularly after the cleaners dropped their request to recover legal fees from the unsuccessful plaintiff. If it were me, I would hesitate to bring this to small-claims court, where it belongs.

You know what I would like to see? This plaintiff laughed out of the courtroom while presenting his case for appeal. I would pay money to watch that.

iirc, people ended up in more lawsuits in the past than they do now - in other words, lawsuits have gone down recently. the average person apparently was sued 3 or 4 times in his life back in the colonial/revolutionary war era.

the real reason that insurance costs and such has gone up is the rise of corporate indifference - corporations tend to go for the bare minimum and have no concern or interest in being good corporate citizens.

this case is just an aberration. albeit by an incredibly insane and tenacious individual who doesn't know when to stop.

Agreed, it makes the news (and a clothing forum) because it is so unusual. "Principal in Closely Held Corp Sues Former Partner Based on Breach of Contract" does not sell papers.

I think you misread it. Unfortunately, the upshot is that he's not going to have to pay any legal fees.

Yes, I guess you are right. I suppose it is the aberrative nature of this (and other very odd lawsuits) that gets it on the news and in our discussions. Nevertheless, the whole thing is still just disturbing...
