I'm considering a Joseph & Lyman cashmere overcoat for ~$300 new. I know that J&L is the Bloomingdale's house brand but don't have any personal experience with their stuff. Can anyone comment on the quality, styling of J&L generally, and whether buying a J&L overcoat would be prudent?

I have a bunch of Joseph and Lyman sweaters, both cashmere and merino wool. Sure they are made in China, but at over 50% off retail when you buy after the season, I think they are good buy. However, I've found the coats to be poorly made and rather baggy, unlike the sweaters that fit me well. I think you can do better for $300. Hopefully others will chime in and can tell you where. I would think Filene's and Century 21. But they may not be available to you, and in that case, I suppose other comments would help in that respect...

I have a wool-cash J&L overcoat that I wear all the time. It's no Canali (to pick another brand at Bloomies), but it is a perfectly serviceable piece. I paid $250 or so a few years ago. If you like the coat, the coat fits well, and you need something right now, go for it.

I have a J&L cashmere scarf. I regret the purchase. It pales in comparison to my Johnstons of Elgin and Lyle & Scott cashmere scarves. It has pilled pretty badly and it is not very soft.

Hello. I have some J&L items and have to agree that they do fit a bit baggy.
The construction is quite good, and w/a bit of alterations will look great.

Good for the price.

Regards.

Thanks for the comments. I guess I should get off my lazy butt and head over to Filene's.
