Around $100 Canadian, which is about the same as American these days. Jon had to get my lasts done twice due to quality issues, but he said he wouldn't charge me extra.

His expensive option would be to go through Springline, whose prices you can find by searching this forum. Springline provides the option of lasted shoe trees. For my pair, Jon said he'd come up with something. I'll post pics of the trees and the shoes when they come in. (I still haven't returned the fitting models yet because Jon's asked for follow-up info.)

$100 sounds really cheap for a pair of custom lasts. How many pairs of shoes can they be used for?

Very many, I'd imagine, especially if the last is plastic.

My lasts are meant for standard dress shoes. I'm not sure whether the same lasts could be used if I wanted a pair of boots or shoes that are shaped very differently. More knowledgeable members here can probably answer that.

Posted the fitting models back to Jon yesterday. They should reach him within a week. I took some more picture of my right foot so he could determine whether there was a fit problem.

Depending on how Jon finds the models, he'll either make a second pair of fitting models or commence on my shoes. He's promised pics on the making of the shoes. :D

Learned today that Jon is making a second pair of fitting models. Will post pics when I get them.

I thought the first pair fit quite well. If RTW shoes fit like them (but not look like them) I would have been ecstatic. Guess I have lots to learn about shoe fit.

Interesting thread! Just wondering whether you know if Jon Gray has plans to do another Ontario tour? I took a quick look through this thread and unfortunately his Ottawa visit was not very well attended, which is where I'm located. In any case keep posting your shoe updates!

I don't know whether Jon plans to visit Ontario this year, but I'll post his schedule if he does.

Yeah, I think he only had two customers in Ottawa. I was the only one at E.R. Fisher. The other one I think was an old friend of his.

Just received word that Jon Gray will be in Ottawa this April. He would like to fit my shoes personally, but I don't see why he can't see a few more potential customers while he's here. :D

I don't have more details yet, but I imagine his visit will be towards the end of April.

Why? He still has to make my shoes. I just received my second pair of fitting models this week, and they look dramatically different--in a good way. Pictures to come.

So another box arrived this week.

Responding to my comment that the first models looked blobby, Jon decided to teach me a lesson.

I was quite surprised at how they looked, since I expected them to look the same but fit better. Well, they looked better too!

Jon reminded me that these are nothing compared to what the final shoes would look like. So, these were hints of things to come.

The package came with the usual accessories: a shoe horn and a pen for marking leather.

There was no shoe horn in the first package. I used my own, but the models fit so tightly that it was difficult to get my feet in. I was too lazy to unlace the models part way, though, so maybe it looked like I didn't use a horn.

This time, however, I couldn't get my feet in at all without unlacing the shoes.

There was also a gap about three-eighth of an inch (3/8") in the lacing on both shoes, which wasn't the case last time. This is good.

The instructions were the same as the first time:

Wearing the same socks as last time (Pantherella wool socks @ year-round weight), I wore the models as I did some ironing, meaning that I walked little and stood a lot. There was no discomfort from the fit, only discomfort from wearing the models too long. Afterwards, I marked up the models as instructed.

(From where my big toe ended, one could see clearly these models were elongated.)

For some reason, the ball joint I marked was ahead of the crack in the sole from my foot flexing. Not sure whether I marked wrong or this was as things should be.

I also noted that there were no obvious gaps in the shoes when my feet were bearing weight.

So, barring any problems that Jon might spot, I think we're off to the final shoes! :D

I'm working with Jon on the toe. I prefer a more rounded toe as well, but not as round as the first models'.

This is a pair Jon made recently. I think they're more to your liking, fritzl. :D

For this order, I gave Jon a picture of a pair of austerity brogues in an elongated last with chiseled toes, hence the look of the 2nd models. They are starting to resemble the picture.

P.S. The more I look at those longwings, the more I want them. I think they are going on my want list.
