I just got my first suit. It is a solid dark charcoal suit. I now need a pair of dress shoes to go with it. I know that Allen Edmonds is the shoe of choice for those that don't want to spend a fortune. I don't really want to pay over $200 dollars for a pair of Park Avenues on sale. I found some Johnston and Murphy Melton black cap toe shoes for $86.99 after tax and shipping. I know they aren't as nice as the AE shoes, but for $86.99 is the J&M shoe a good deal? Would the black cap toe be a good choice to go with a dark charcoal suit?

Yes, that would work fine. You can also check ebay for higher quality used shoes in your size.

It's not a bad shoe, I have one in the closet from pre-SF days. The leather isn't great (corrected grain I think) but it's not terrible for a lower priced shoe. I still wear it from time to time and don't feel bad doing so.

There's a Bostonian cap toe blucher if you like the look of big clunky gunboats but with a rubber soul.

I went ahead and bought them. I got them for $86.99 after tax from DSW with free shipping. I figured I can return them to the store if I don't like them. Thank you.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
