On a completely unrelated non-clothing matter, do you know Slatterly's married to George Clooney's ex-wife?

She is Martin Balsam's daughter and has appeared on Mad Men too.

THe Viktor and Rolf suit looks the best, but I was surprised how good the Etro and Dsquared suits look to me. The cut of the Varvatos does not fit him well at all though.

The D&G one doesn't fit well. I didn't even know Dsquared makes suits like that but I still hate the brand. Pringle suit looks nice too.

For those who want to look current, plaid suits are retro (but not retro enough) at the moment in both the US and UK. Apparently in the UK, the POW can also have a "slick" association.

Plaids for men aren't common in England at the moment. However, glen plaids have been something of a staple for women's autumn/winter fashion for quite a few years now, usually in softer, feminine colourways, they're also fashionable for children's wear here as well.

FNB, I have never heard plaids especially the POW being referred to as slick here in England, if anything it's probably quite the opposite, as like you said, they're seen as a little retro, well, retro, on men that is.

I know that the very dark ones in navy or charcoal that practically look like solids are actually acceptable for city wear. The ones I am thinking of are the classical black and white ones which from a distance have that medium to light grey, even silvery look. Someone in England (and in the know) said that they really have died off there and are mostly for hucksters etc... Perhaps brown ones or flannel like ones are more country in England.

None of those in the photoshoot are bold plaids so some of them are acceptable for office wear in my opinion.

Slattery was on Fresh Air a few weeks ago. He said he was born in 1962, so he's only 46! His character on Mad Men is clearly supposed to be a lot older, as he is a generation older than Draper.

I saw him in Manhattan this summer and he is much younger looking in person. They definitely age him for the show. I have a brown plaid cashmere suit from Oxxford, very different but beautiful. I'm a trial lawyer in Baltimore City and don't wear it to trial but we don't get many farmers on our juries.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
