Calm down kids. It's marketing. They are in the business of selling shoes. Based on the one pic above, that's a pretty damn nice shoe. Wouldn't pay $1500+ for it, but great looking nonetheless.

You can say what you want about JL prices, but there are, far and away, the best shoes that come thru my hands for re-finishing. Actually, none come to me for 'refinishing', only a different finish....I get plenty of $1000 shoes that need to be RE-finished (i.e. fixed).

Besides, I don't think their target customer is really concerned about price.

Quality wise, very similiar. Lobb offers far more interesting uppers though, and a more universal shape selection. Vass is a very segmented brand - the F last, while it takes pretty pictures, looks impossible to fit, and would look good only up to size 9, IMO. Very few people could pull it off well. The Budapester last is a certain customer.....Peter last also a limited appeal. Vass are surprisingly light (a mark of a great shoe, btw) but very stiff and unforgiving. Present alot of difficulties commercially, which is why they have no business here, really. Doesn't make sense, I know, as they offer a fantastic value....they have an appeal but I think it's best served in their own shop/market.

Lobb, on the other hand, knows exactly what they are doing pattern/last/material wise, and they know how to market and serve their core customer. I know people here throw darts at them due to the prices, but like I said, their guy doesn't worry much with price and I don't think they have much need to explain. From my side of the fence, they are as well organized as anyone out there....admire them alot.

Thanks for the articulate reply. I bought my first pair of Vass (full brogue derbies on the New Peter last) in Budapest a few weeks ago and I'm very pleased. I also thought they compared well with JL Paris (which I've coveted in their Jermyn St shop but can't reasonably afford), and thus that they are better than E. Green. But you're right: I wouldn't have bought them without visiting their shop. However, now that I know which last fits me I will certainly order more by post, perhaps through their MTO programme. In fact I think they do quite a lot of business that way: they gave me booklets with their models and leather, and in the back there is a dedicated page where they annotated my last and size details for reference for future orders.
