I once told a friend that I could never wear anything other than black shoes. Boy! Is he going to make me eat my words, especially after the Berluti and Bemer.

After a 6 month wait, and while I was in Florence, I got a call for the JL boutique informing me that my MTO had arrived. When I got back, I rushed straight to the boutique only to find that it was shut for refurbishment (a few typhoons ago, all of Central Hong Kong was flooded ankle deep).

Anyway, I really like the modern look of a two eyelet derby and the Luffield really fitted the bill. I also wanted something rather dark but not black, so I settled on deep grey august calf. They turned our rather well and I love the way that they look elusively black until they are paired up with either a navy or grey suit, when the deep grey takes on some nice character.

Thanks for reading. The photo quality wasn't as good as I hoped since they were hastily taken early one morning when the natural light was not as good as I hoped. I also didn't get to cover all the angles.

Those are great shoes, I have them in dark brown museum calf.
Just curious why they made you place an MTO order, as I thought black museum calf, which that looks like, is a stock color, and the shoe is pretty widely available in sizes, at least out here.

Is the "museum"-ness of the leather visible in natural light? It doesn't seem to be from the photos, and looks more like the dark gray august calf. (Great shoes, of course; just wondering if a lighter color such as pewter museum would have given you a more pronounced visual effect)

These are very nice. Is that a crust leather? I'm curious to see how these age with wear. I have been thinking about a pair of Chapels in the Grey Museum Calf, but I am a little unsure due to the severe variations in the color and tone. It may be just the effects of the varied environments, cameras, and photographers, but I would hate to spend that much money only to be disappointed by the results. Did specify the color and tone that you wanted? If so, how did the product compare to your expectations?

Again, great shoes.

I agree, though it would be even better if they finished the edge on it.

You mean of the facings? I was looking at that too, and sort of amazed that they'd left it that way.

From what I remember, they used to have a model that had them done normally, and then they changed the finishing there and released it as a new one. I could be wrong, though. With such an elegant shoe, that kind of finishing is a little off.

Gents, you guys are sharp. In my haste, I made an error in my post (which I have since corrected). They are deep grey august calf. My apologies and my hat (if I wore one) to the both of you.

Am new to this so not sure if they are crust leather. Will actually check with the boutique.

Indeed. Very surprised too. Asked the store lass about it and I got a blank stare. I just wish that boutiques in HK educate their employees more.

It's like going to a Japanese restaurant and making a variation in the standard menu item. 8 out of 10 times, they stuff it up.
