My City II were so practical and versatile..

They're so popular they brought them back after the debacle of the City III.

I will go for them especially as a first pair..

If those are your two options, without hesitation, my choice would be Philip II.

However, between those two, City II it is, Monsieur.

City II is strictly a suit shoe. Plain cap. I don't see how you could team it with a more casual look.

Chigwell on the other hand has the brogue detail and you can pull them of with the suit and in less formal occasion ..

Philip II would also be my choice if money is not an object, but they are at least 30% more expensive than Chigwell or City II.

I went to see some picture of the Philip II and they're gorgeous! I plan to stop by they store this weekend to try everything.
If I understand well the Philip II is in the higher range? What does it mean in terms of quality and construction? Better calf?

If you dissect the leathers apart you will not notice any difference.
The extra 30% premium in price can easily be visible with the better
Finished bevel waist and solid trees provided.

If you’re comparing the classic range to the special yearly models
Like the JL 2008/2009/2010 models etc – then the leather on those are
far superior. And notice the JL SC 2010 – that’s a very very special 1 piece
of high grade calf with meticulous cutting and hand sewing that only a few
artisan at the JL factory have the skills to achieve. The JL 2010 is only available
on the 7000 last. Personally I like it on the 8000 Last.

The likes of EG, Saint Crispin and Vass may not have audacity to make a piece
like this for their RTW range (maybe for MTO orders only). The production cost far too high for them to justify. JL & Hermes client base alone in Japan & USA can simply absorb the supply.

I agree. And I find most of the Expensive Prestige Range more exotic looking than the Classic range.

Thank you for all the information and advices.

I didn't resist to visit EG and Lobb store in Paris during my lunch break one hour ago.

The sales guy at Lobb show me all the finishing differences between the City II and the Philip II. I do understand now the premium price for the Prestige line. Moreover when you include the shoe tree the difference is not that big. He also told me that I could order my Philip II in Museum Calf with no extra cost (I was afraid of that since Museum colors are not available anymore on their website).

On the other hand I also fell in love with the Edward Green Berkeley in 202 last. I had the feeling these shoes would be easier to wear in both casual and dressy outfit whereas the Philip II are definitively more dressy shoes to my eyes.
