With cotton, you don't even need to use the dryer to restore the shape, man. Just a cold wash and hang/air dry is good enough. Don't use the dryer for clothes you care about; that's one of the worst ways to ruin your clothes.
I agree with most of what you said but if you wanted the least amount of wear and tear then use the dryer with a simple technique.
Put a damp hand towel in the dryer with your unwashed cotton garment and run a short dry cycle. This achieves the shrinking effect and avoids wear from a wash cycle (especially if your washer is the agitator kind).

A lot of newer washers and dryers have a steam cycle

Anyone have the Antelope (pink) thumper and know if it runs TTS? Sizing charts on JE and Ssense aren't even close to each other. Are the other thumpers this year running TTS?

if anyone got a pair of the cast 2 plumas from the sample sale in 29 that's too big, i have a nwt 28 to swap!
