Any thoughts on quality? I'm sure they aren't high end but are they considered sub par?

Thanks,

This is a mall brand I think. Not high quality cashmere. But that's like saying not a high quality BMW. Cashmere is nice. I have some of these. They will pill up. Then they make good sleepwear in the coldest parts of winter.

John Ashford is the house brand for Foley's, Hecht's and possibly some of the other May department stores. Those stores were bought out by Macy's and I think most of them have been turned into Macy's by now. I thought the John Ashford brand might get phased out in the changeover, but so far it still appears to be around.

John Ashford stuff is probably roughly equal to Macy's Club Room line in quality. Basic department store stuff. I've had a few John Ashford casual shirts and they started fading and showing wear after not long. One heavyish one I still rather like though. It has faded, but not in a way that looks bad.

A couple years ago or so the John Ashord line had a label that looked just like the RLPL label. I wonder if they got in trouble for that?

I got a black cashmere sweater for sale at Robinsons' May (before they were bought out by macy's) for either $80 or $90. Too much in my opinion. It's a think, clumsy sweater that pills way too much. The fit is rather generous as well. Not worth it.

Try the Bloomingdale's house brand Joseph Lyman - by now, however, they probably only have random ones left from the winter season at $70 - $80. Would have been better if you jumped on those back in January for a better selection. Better quality in my opinion. Also generous fit, so I went a size down from my typical size. Nice colors, and I don't notice an inordinate amount of pilling (or none as of yet) as I did with the Ashford ones.

I think you're better off spending your money on higher quality lambswool or merino than poor quality cashmere. The cheap cashmere is scratchy, pills easily, won't hold up or hold color as well, and, appparently, is helping to ruin the ecosystem. Lambswool or merino wool, especially after a wash and sometimes a quick toss in the dryer (be careful), is nearly as soft (and rarely scratchy), typically more durable, and cheaper.

I second the merino wool suggestion. I bought a Chinese cashmere sweater in sept and it has barely lasted through the season. seams split, and it pilled to the point of wearing through the cloth, I don't even wear it that much!
