Hello, would love to get suggestions from people who have had 180s!
Online size guide suggested 6E but I happen to come across a 6.5D at great deal. With my thinnest dress socks (ribbed wool) the fit is not too bad but there is a bit of heel slip. My heel lifts a bit as I walk though doesn't come out of shoe. At this point, I don't think I'd keep the shoe if this heel slip persists. (width wise though, fit is good). With slightly thicker dress socks, fit is better with a tiny bit of heel slip.
So, my question is based on your experience does the heel slip get's significantly better after several wears?
(I can't wear for longer to try as I might be returning the shoes)
I've previously tried 6E (but with the heavier rubber sole) and heel wasn't too snug there as well.
For reference, I wear 7UK in CJ Boston/Harvard and have wide forefoot with narrow heel.
Thank you!

P.S: I know that perhaps I can use a tongue pad to fix the issue but would like to avoid it if I can.

What you describe is exactly what I experienced. The JMW system suggested a 9.5E, but I ended up getting a 10 F which was perfect. I wear a UK 10.5 G, so they suggested a 6E, but you had luck with a 6.5D and you wear a UK 7...so 1/2 size down from the UK sizing. Everything I've heard from others say the heel slip goes away after a time, I have two pairs, both very new, only wore each shoe twice. I have a suede and a boxcalf - both 180s - the suede slips more than the boxcalf, but it's manageable, personally, if the 6.5D with a thicker sock works I might keep it and fix with a tongue pad - for me it would depend on how big the deal is. However, I would also point out that if you sign up for an account at JM Weston, you'll get sale emails, and when they go on sale, they get marked down from 770E to 616E - BUT not every pair goes on sale....If you're in the US, you can't order from the site, you have to email them and go through a boutique...I believe the main boutique is in Limoges - that's who I dealt with, the email is: [email protected] and the managers name is Melanie Divers....they send you a credit card charge form, the whole process is a bit awkward, but it's safe and they are very nice, I got a hand written thank you card for both pairs...hope this helps.

Thank you for the prompt reply. That sounds promising. I must say there was a difference in heel slip even after 10 mins of wear but I just don't know how much better it will get with prolonged use. Perhaps, on the contrary, the leather expands and fit gets worse!

Also, thanks for sharing the email. I had previously contacted one of the store at Saint-Honore last year.

Happy to help...I really love the brand and the 180 loafer. I think my brown suede pair are my favorite pair of loafers..I love the split toe that JMW does. Also, suede has very little vamp crease and/or roll..so they should age really well (I live in an area that gets very little rain - so easy to take care of)

suede tongue pad worked quite well for my half size too large 180. Like you width/volume in forefoot was good. But instep slightly too high and a bit too long where the heel wasn’t gripped well enough by heel counter.

Anyone know size differential between 180 and Golf? I wear 10C in the 180, I know that the golf is a bit different, not sure whether I should be looking at 10D or 10.5C.

I got both of them, I am 6D in 180. The robot from J.M. Weston website suggest me 6E. But in reality, size 6 in Golf is way too short. First time I went for size 6 and purchase a pair of 6D from Mr Porter, and it was too short but they were non-returnable(long story). So next time I got a couple pairs in 6 1/2 D they fit perfectly. Also, I don't think you will find C width outside France, except in Japan.

Thanks, I’ll contact Weston and see what they recommend. In my experience widths make a huge difference in length, but I’ll see what they say. Fingers crossed I end up needing a D and don’t get stuck only able to order from the boutique like with the 180!

RE: your earlier post about the shoe trees not getting vamp creases out, I think we’re in the same boat. Weston makes a huge variety of widths, but it isn’t cost effective for them to make shoe trees for all of them in addition to length. For instance, my shoe trees are model 041M, which I’ve read they use for A,B, and C widths. They fit very well, but with very little pressure. I bet you’re in the same situation with your F width.

Agree - not thrilled with JMW shoe trees, but they are very nice. The vamp always creases on just about every shoe, for whatever reason, the boxcalf 180 for me creased quite a bit versus the suede. I recently got a pair of hand grade C&J loafers, was very excited, and they creased quite a bit too. I think smooth calf just creases more versus other types. Look at this picture of a pair of C&J Boston loafers in country grain...these crease quite a bit while wearing, but the shoe trees I use, from Amazon for just $20 each, take the creases right out when put in....

Shoe trees for 180 came in two style one is 041M which is significantly narrower, the other one is 041L for rest for the width. My point of view, 041M only suitable for A/B width while 041L is for the rest. But not sure why J.M. Weston will supply 041M shoe tree even for D width if you don't request specifically for 041L.
