Stewart. Hitchcock blamed Vertigo's failure on his looking 'old', of all things.

I have to say his 'aw shucks' routine never did much for me.

Vertigo is by far Hitchcock's best film though, I guess this doesn't fixes box office failure.

+1. My second favorite is Rear Window which also starred JS.

He has superb wardrobe in Vertigo, Man Who Knew Too Much, Rope, Dial M for Murder etc. He had a great body for suits of that era, really tall and almost abnormally slim.
