Jeans to balance out the bottom for a skinny guy?

I'm tall and skinny. My girlfriend says I need a slight flare to the bottom of my jeans (like a boot cut) to balance that out. I agree it looks much better when I have jeans that do this. The problem is, all that fabric usually just ends up flapping around my ankles. I think it's because I have skinny calves that don't take up enough room in the jean.

Is there a solution or a cut that will solve this? Can you starch jeans to make the fabric less flappy?

Wait, so you want a bootcut jean but not flappy fabric? That's pretty much the nature of bootcut and the whole "slight flare to balance out skinniness" is just girl magazine BS they used to sell ugly bootcut jeans.

Depending on how skinny you are, you might want a slim-straight or a jean with a taper, that is it gets smaller around your ankle so it's more proportional to your actual leg shape.

No it isn't. That's like saying double breasted sport coats look fine on someone with a 44" chest.

I'm simply not a fan of bootcut jeans in general, the best ones are very slight and at that point it might as well a straight leg.

With bootcut jeans it widens at the point in your legs where they are the smallest and if it's not the exact right length then it looks really sloppy because you can' exactly stack bootcut jeans. Also it leaves a lot of extra flopping fabric and it tends to swallow up your shoes.

If he doesn't want to emphasize his skinniness then he can at least get slim straight legs that will just emphasize height.

Slim straight jeans, don't get a bootcut...
You want it to be straight from the knee down, for the most part

Bootcut is either old-school guys, like maybe ones actually wearing boots, or girls with big butts and thighs that want to balance them out.

Stick with straight cuts instead of tapered ones

Go with a true straight or slight bootcut. Tapered cuts will look bad on you.

I'm pretty thin (six feet, about 140 pounds) and a find slim (but *not* painted-on skinny), slightly tapered cut to be flattering. My 5EPxSF (29 inch waist, my regular size) and APC New Standards (tagged 27 inch waist) are the best-fitting jeans I own.

I think the key is finding a cut that does not exaggerate your thinness (a la April 77, etc.) but also doesn't look like you're trying to cover it up. (I think taking into account the length of your feet in relation to the size of the hem is critical, as well.)

Agree with the recommendations, but aren't they tapered? Correct me if I'm wrong but IMO slim straight means 501 type cut.

like the rest of the guys on here, girlfriends are rarely a great source for men's fashion (although this is not always the case)

Like the other's I'd say slim or skinny jeans. I'd say embrace the skinny look (seeing as skinny and tall is "in" these days) rather than try to mask it.

I think this is good advice.
