They were orangutans. And yes, if they got pissed off, they would be able to rip a Japanese person limb from limb. I also saw people who cracked eggs over their heads and then stuck their heads in a cage with a 5 foot monitor lizard. The person who kept their head in the cage longest "won"... Remember, we are crazy and don't care. Don't try to apply your "American logic" to our television shows.

Japan is a gambaru culture; society places a major emphasis on "toughing it out." You've all heard about the Japanese soldiers stranded in remote areas of the Philipines who either didn't realize the war had ended or refused to surrender for thirty or forty years. This is a similar value system applied to reality television.

It also makes for particularly enjoyable TV viewing when the "endurance test" is to drop bikini-clad women into pools of ice-water!
