Once again proving that the Japanese are superior in every way.

along the same lines but more extreme was the show Super Jockey in the 90s. It was only shown in Tokyo but Japanese video rental stores had copies of the show on tape. Easily the funniest thing I have ever seen on tv. The amount of pain and humiliation the contestants had to go thru, just to promote their club or store for 30 sec was insane.

Oh man, I had this emailed to me a couple weeks ago. I couldn't stop laughing. I forwarded it to who-even-knows how many people. Totally brilliant.

"To start, you may choose between three categories:
'Ow, that hurts!', 'Why are you doing this to me!', or 'Please let me die!'."

I have, on VHS, a few episodes of the japanese game show of sorts called Za Gaman (Endurance). Some of you may be familiar with it, some may not. But its highly entertaining.
The world's most extreme game show is Japan's Za Gaman (Endurance), created in 1984 as a prime time series on the Fuji Network. Contestants are forced to endure different types of mental and physical torture, such as standing on their heads with hot coals on their feet, or hanging between swinging cactii above a tank full of snakes. The winners are those who can endure pain the longest. Endurance was less of a game show and more of a pain show. While the half-naked contestants competed to withstand endure pain, agony, and sometimes Arctic temperatures the show's producers were basking in the glow of appreciation from audiences hooked on agony. It ran until 1992, but it's still the most extreme game show the world has ever seen. FIVE FREAKY THINGS ENDURANCE CONTESTANTS HAD TO DO 1. Hang on a cactus above a pit of snakes. 2. Enter an ape enclosure covered in bananas. 3. Cross a bridge of rolling logs over alligators. 4. Sit naked in the icy cold, drinking beer – the last one to go to the bathroom was the winner. 5. Do a headstand in the hot sun while leaning against a sweltering piece of metal.
There's also this brilliant piece of "reality" television... http://www3.tky.3web.ne.jp/~edjacob/nasubi.html

To enhance your viewing pleasure, keep in mind that the little circles with the Chinese characters say "ass" (shiri) when it's covering their hind quarters and "balls" (kin, short for kintama [lit., "gold balls"]) when it's covering their berries.

It's worth noting also that personal injury lawsuits are pretty much unheard of in Japan.
