Following on from previous posts on high end pens and watches I thought I would have to post some of these images of leather designs by Japanese artisans making briefcases as seen in the December issue of Real Design. There are some drop dead gorgeous pieces here. Enjoy.

Nice work Sator.

Where did you find this gear?

Some great bags amongst that mix.

good stuff, thanks! I'm intrigued by the rectangular one (pictured next to the orange bag). An unusual shape for a standard case, looks more like an accordion envelope for organizing receipts and bills. Why someone would tote something like that around from work to office is beyond me, but it looks great.

Thanks for sharing - beautiful objects. Some of them verge on "purse-y" ala kate spade or Hermes.

What's the long fob on the black case?

Some interesting and inspired designs there.

Do men in Japan or Australia live in constant fear of being ridiculed by their peers for carrying a bag that looks "pursey"? Because a lot of men in US do.

To answer Tage, I believe the long fob conceals a key. Ala Hermes.

I can`t speak for Australia, but in Japan you could carry any type of bag you want without fear of being riduculed. This is not just bags, but style in general...you can wear what you think is stylish without worrying about what everyone else thinks is stylish.

For a free country, the U.S. has a really narrow sense of style in my opinion. Especially men`s style. (a little related to the Bond swimwear thread, ascot threads, pocket square threads as well)

I'd venture that Australian men might be exposed to ridicule for left-field style choices. It's a very blokey culture, and most people are not highly educated on fashion matters. I remember when clutch bags for men were in, there was a lot of ribbing of the guys who carried them. It's just how we are; we take the piss out of our friends every chance we get.

Clutch bags are seen frequently in Japan and China.

Dmax, thanks for the feedback.

re: "the U.S. has a really narrow sense of style in my opinion. Especially men`s style."

Though this statement may be very true. My comment was not in the spirit of the Bond thread. It's not that the cases are soft and sculptural but that the details are copying now classic ladies bags in stitching and form, particularly the two on the last page and the Hermes fob.
