Did a little partaking at that N-M sale LOL. It'll go down to 50 off the discount if you can wait another couple of weeks. Anybody besides me purchase anything? If so, what?

Sales are on their second and third markdowns in Chicago---
Neiman's looks great, but Barney's is amazing. Picked over a bit, but very nice discounts on Helmut Lang and Margiella w/ plenty left. Varvatos is on ssale every I go... Alot of his basics were still around. I've noticed alot of excess Varvatos this season. It may be because buyers bought too much of the line. It didn't seem too interesting to me this season as well?
Also, the whole Michael Kors line is marked down by about 50% on what's left. I think that's due to the fact that you have to break the bank to buy casual pieces... It's priceline is really high for what it is. The line is nice, but not that nice. Good luck and happy hunting.
    Happy new year,
    Pete

Here in Houston both Saks and Neiman's seem fairly picked over, though I've only been looking at shirts and ties. Both Saks and Neiman's are at 30% off plus previous markdowns; I was curious if Saks generally did any further markdowns like the eventual 50% off at Neiman's, as I did see a few things there that piqued my interest, but not enough to override my patience. I did end up getting a Zegna shirt at Saks; nothing fancy but it was a good deal at $65, which was better than prices at Bluefly or outlets.

Speaking of outlets, how are the prices/selections there around this time of year? The Off 5th's I've been to never really thrilled me, but I've seen Steve B. say good things about the Last Call in Austin and was contemplating a drive up there before I go back to school in a few days. Is it worth the 2-3 hour drive (I'm mainly looking for shirts, ties, and formalwear) or would I be better off looking elsewhere?

How much of a discount is Brioni offering. I'm super busy these days, not to mention over budget wrt. clothing, but I would be tempted to go to their Beverly Hills location if the discount is sufficiently deep.

    Ay:

Every time I've been in that Last Call in Austin they've had great stuff. But with outlets you never know...Have you tried any of the local specialty stores there in Houston?

Both of the Off 5ths in Houston weren't that impressive the days I was there...

In the DC area, both Saks and Neiman's are at 30% off prior markdowns.  Not enough to get me to bite.  I'm playing "chicken" with the retailers, hoping they'll go lower.  Has anyone seen 40% or 50% off sales yet?

Hey Amby would this be at Tyson's Corner? I'm thinking of making my way down there towards the end of January so please keep us(me) informed of what sales are going on there. Is there any other good areas to check out? Was down at Georgetown not too long ago, but did really care for the stores there. Though I did like Tyson's a lot better. Next Time I want to check out the Gucci, and Hermes stores. Thanks.

I got to go to Bergdorf's, and there was a fair amount on sale. Unfortunately, I just did not see that much there that I liked, except for a pair of grey flannel Michael Kors pants, which I decided to forgo on. That's been the whole story for this season (and Spring '02)--just not much out there that gets me itching to whip out my credit card. There was an article along these lines in the NY Times yesterday about how consumers are claiming that retail has lost it's footing and ability to maintain distinct identities. Here's the link: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/01/04/business/04SHOP.html

As I wrote before, I think that F/W 2002-2003 was a rather weak season. I saw a few key pieces I liked, but didn't really see any particularly cohesive collections, unlike, say, for F/W 2001-2002, which I thought really strong with a strong and popular military theme throughout. Granted, some designers went overboard, but at least every collection had some strong core pieces. My favorite recent menswear collections, I'd have to say, are:

Jil Sander F/W 1999-2000 (Alas, those days are gone)
    Prada F/W 2001-2002
    Miu Miu F/W 2001-2002
    Burberry S/S 2002
John Varvatos F/W 1999-2000 (inaugural season, downhill ever since)
    Dior Homme S/S 2002
    Paul Smith F/W 2001-2002

And I sort of always like the Costume National collections for their basics. I can't say that I always get their directional pieces. And their are some designers like Margiela always catch my eye, but whom I would never rank among my favorites. And there are other designers who I really one aspect of, but am otherwise ambivalent to - Tom Ford's YSL Rive Gauche shirts being a case in point.

Yep, I was at Tyson's Corner this past weekend.  In my opinion, it's as good as it gets in the DC area.  As you know, Tyson's Corner is composed of several shopping areas: (1) Tyson's Corner Center, a good all-purpose mall featuring Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom (but with an absurdly small food court and a movie theater that for some odd reason is across the street), (2) its newer and more upscale sibling, Tyson's Galleria, which features Neiman, Saks, and Hugo Boss, among others, and (3) Fairfax Square, a ground level series of stores in an office building that includes Gucci, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, and Tiffany's.  I have only been to Fairfax Square once, to buy a silver money clip from Tiffany's, so I can't comment on the selection or prices of the other boutiques.

The casualwear stuff on sale at Saks and Neiman is mainly odds and ends that you'll have to pick through.  You'll have better luck if you're looking for dress clothes.  Hugo Boss is selling selected items for 30 to 50% off.

Thanks. Do you know if the store (forget it's name), in the Gallery, that had Hugo Red and D&G closed yet? Seemed like an interesting store, shame I only got to check them out once. Also didn't know that there was an LV and Tiffany's at the Fairfax Square. Will definitely have to check out Tiffany's since I've never been in one. Now do they run sales, or are their prices set for good? Later. . .

Saks is at 40% off right now.  Don't know if they'll go any higher.

Usually fine jewelry items never go on sale, like cosmetics. But who knows? Retail has done so badly this year, even Tiffany's or similar stores might have a sale. They might have some discontinued items that are on sale as well.
