Isn't that a question you can levy on literally any interesting piece of fashion? When would you really wear a casual suit/ Ring coat/ Acronym parka/ Visvim noragi/ drape cut sport coat in London Lounge horse blanket tweed, etc in the Bay Area?

^ this Stetson is admittedly a little over the top, even for me, whereas a beat up hat would more suit my tastes. You obviously don’t have to be a cowboy to wear a Stetson, but a slightly misshapen hat can cross over to various styles and would be easier to pair.

I feel like those hats look less unusual than 90% of the stuff we talk about on here. In California, those hobo hats are worn by a certain artist type. Very much rich, white, middle-aged creative who likes to say things like "I love your energy." They love dinner parties, farm to table restaurants, old country music, and hippie things.

Have a friend who used to be a fashion designer in the 90s. His clothes were sold at Fred Segal. He met his wife at a fashion photo shoot that I helped set up (his wife was a fashion photographer at the time). Now they run a chocolate shop. The hat is very much "them."





Also know a bunch of guys in California who dress like this










Nick Fouquet's hats feel very much at home to me with that kind of look. I mean, is it an affected look? I mean, sure. I guess. But I don't know if it's any more affected than 99% of the stuff we talk about on here.

I’ve followed urbancomposition’s style evolution for about a decade. When I said it’s looks costumey, it’s because his style does not strike me as anything close to what you’ve posted above. I wasn’t making a comment that style wouldn’t work for anyone in the Bay Area or California more generally.

I’m revisiting my tastes in the 90s, when I was really into 70’s sleaze/thrift store/Tom Ford era Gucci. Never really grew out of it.

Folks talking about vintage tortoise Ascari a few pages back. A week in with my pair and they're really stunning. Translucent in parts so in the sun there's a neat effect, looks differenft at every angle.

I brought up missing out on the Ascaris at a sample sale and the rep dug a pair out he had saved. According to him I got the last pair available outside of the archive I assume JMM keeps. Super stoked on them. I've seen most of the JMM materials and my vote would be the antique tortoise being the most unique.
