Curious though, does this oxidation/patina do any structural damage to the metal and wirecore? Or it just an aesthetic thing?

The 3 pins on the side of my Dealans have turned wonky colours.

@RegisDB9 I think you had your gold plated hardware polished and it turned silver?

How is one actually supposed to care for their frames? I wash mine at the end of the day with warm water and soap, and wipe down with a microfiber cloth.

Well I once took my VT Ascaris to the beach and noticed the “gold” arrow did tarnish a bit …when I went to clean them I no longer had gold arrows but nice silver ones haha. Pretty disappointed but it is what it is

I’d call that a result!
Don’t really like gold anything, much prefer silver.

Makes me a little suspicious that those glasses’ hardware may have been gold plated rather than gold.
Aren’t they usually advertised as having ‘precious metals’?
That may not be really playing fair.

I was disappointed cause I’m obviously a fan of JMM but I’ve had lesser brands hold up just fine after taking a nice swim in the ocean even….the Ascaris didn’t even get wet

I just love gold though, clicks with my whole Caribbean beach bum persona…but silver goes better with my Caribbean cowboy persona haha whynotboth.gif

I think they're 14k plated sterling silver, so I'd say that's precious.
OK - I don’t claim any expertise in metallurgy, I’m sure there is a range of how well one metal can be plated with another.
Maybe we should just not wear our JMMs to the beach after all? 😁😁

I’m pretty sure the product pages say gold plated sterling silver (vermeil) like lsterling said.
If they really made some with solid 14k gold and others with sterling silver then the price difference between those 2 models would be >$1,000

I would expect that the gold plating would not be affected so easily in 800 USD frames.

By the way, I'd love to have the usual detailing in massive gold in the Last Frontier range, instead of those pompous ornaments, but understand that I'm probably in the minority here.

From a little googling ...

The problem is often not with the plating itself but with the base metal which is prone to corroding and oxidizing. Over time, the molecules of the base metal eventually move into the gold layer, affecting its appearance. If the gold plating is very thin, it will discolor and start to look like tarnish quickly.

And this for Regis ...

Don’t expose gold plated jewelry to chlorinated or salty water. This means taking off the jewelry before swimming in pools, hot tubs or the sea. Body oils and sweat can also impact gold plating. Keep gold plated jewelry away from chemicals, oils and makeup.

Interesting stuff. (I also take the earlier point about the difference in price between gold and silver).
When I got the wedding set for my missus (who like me does not like gold even though she comes from a place that was once called The Gold Coast and is related to the Ashanti King who is dripping in gold!) I got her white gold as I didn’t want gold plated with silver in case the plating wore off. I think white gold is mixed with nickel or something to give it a silver colour. Maybe JMM could avoid plating / tarnishing issues if they tried that? Price prohibitive?

White gold is still gold and its price is as high as for yellow and rose gold. Moreover white gold is mostly rhodium plated.

One of the best fits on the Belize in my eyes.
