i've been trying to search for a clearer answer to this question but have not really gotten anything definitive

when you buy a new jacket and remove the thread that's sewn into the outside pocket to put in say a pocket square how does compromising the integrity of the pocket affect the look of the jacket later on?

does that outside pocket eventually become droopy or looks unkempt if it's stretched out since the thread is no longer maintaining it in place?

i've never done pocket squares before and wanting to try them out but i'm also curious about how it will affect the look of my jacket and the pocket over time.

It has no effect whatever. Two reasons - one purely for display and another back in the 170s when terrorists used to put incendiary devices in the pockets of clothes to start fires in shops.

If you put heavy things in the pockets it can cause them to droop over time, but a pocket-square would not be heavy enough to cause this.

You're supposed to cut the thread and open the pockets. Use them how you wish. If you put stuff in the outside pockets, they can cause the jacket to "droop" or slouch and also bulge out a little bit. But who cares? If that's what you want, that's what you want.

edit: And no, leaving the thread in does not help protect the integrity of the pocket. If you don't put stuff in the pockets, they will maintain their shape perfectly. (Forgot to answer your initial question.)
