Embarrassing as it is, I still haven't figured out how to judge the proper jacket length for my frame. (I'm 6'-1" and my weight fluctuates between 175-180 lbs.)

Here I've posted pictures of myself wearing jackets of 3 different lengths, each one from 4 different angles. Based on these images, please tell me which length you think is the most flattering, and please elaborate if possible. I would also like to know if anyone has any strong opinions about which button stance looks best.

Note: I included the "flasher" pix so you could judge the jacket's length against my waistline and taint. Enjoy!

First I present a blue herringbone. It's a 41L and has never been altered.

Next up is a gray bird's eye. It's a 41R and has had some waist suppression and sleeve lengthening.

And finally, here's an olive herringbone. It's a 41L that has been shortened by my tailor. I had to beg him to do it because he thought the length was already just right.

All opinions are welcome and will be greatly appreciated.

All look a tad long. #2 is probably closest to best fit.

Better pictures with more accurate angles would help (set height of camera around chest level; your current shots are almost looking down)

But based on your pixs I'd say #2 also.

My vote is #2. The jackets also seem a bit big overall, but maybe that is just because I wear mine too small..

Another vote for #2. Long enough to cover your ass, yet does not make your legs appear as short as #1 and #3 do. Regular def. looks better on you. If sleeve length is an issue (you appear to have long arms in the pics), I'd suggest you stick with Regular jackets and have the sleeves lengthened if necessary (just make sure there's enough material to do so).

all in all i think number 2 is the best fit. The shoulders on all three are a touch big (with #2 being closest to true shoulder size).

They could all do with some cleaning in the back ... or at least a knowledge of how the back should look, so that future purchases look cleaner in the back.

In terms of buttoning point 3, seems to have the lowest buttoning point, yet i'm not sold on it because of the creasing/pulling on the side. 2 seems a touch high, but that is really nitpicking.

The difference is maybe an inch between the second and the first/third? If I remember correctly, you take your height / 2 then subtract 4 and that is how long your coat should be from under the collar (in inches). But depending on length of arm/ hand this can vary. From what I see, in the second picture, the jacket ends closer to the wrist, maybe 1/3 into the palm area. The other two pictures, the jacket ends around half way into the palm area.

I've put my height into the formula and basically i can wrap my fingers around the bottom without bending the fabric. It looks like he could do this with all three jackets...So are any of them really TOO long? When does a matter of preference cross the threshold into ill fitting? Obviously a zoot suit would be too long, but what do you think is the longest acceptable length in proportion to your height?

I can't see a formula being a good way to do this.

I don't understand what's so complicated about "covers the buttocks while maintaining the longest possible leg line."

+1

This really makes it tricky to judge properly, but I do agree with the consensus for # 2.

I vote for #2, too. Reason: The jacket's length should be at the half of your palm, at the height of your knuckles.

Spot-on. That's the calc.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
