Jacket button placement discussion

I've been looking through the jackets from my suits and my sportcoats, trying to find what looks best on me. I'm 6'2". I've noticed that jackets look best on my when the top button is either at my navel or an inch or so above it. I'm of course referring to the top button you close. Since I have long-ish legs this seems to balance out my look. I have some Regular length sport coats that have the buttons about 3 inches above my navel and it messes up my proportions

Where do you prefer the buttons of your jackets to lie? Do you use your navel to decide this or is there something else you look for?

I haven't checked, but navel sounds about right.

I really hate jackets with high button stances.

Yes me too. Especially on really tall people... like basketball players.

I prefer the button to be around my navel. But generally Italian RTW brands seem to be above my navel by around 2 inches.

Personally at your height, you can go as high as the base of your sternum (below chest) for a 3B and lower for a 2B. If you're wide at the hips, that makes a difference too.

You know the narrowest part of you, below your ribs but before you widen out towards the hips? Button goes there. Don't know why this gives people trouble.

The navel is an approximation of the natural waist, but as it really just shows where your umbilical cord used to be, it's not a perfect correlation. My waist is above my navel. I suppose the reverse is possible.

Most peoples waists are an inch or two above the navel (and the hips a couple of inches below). The buttoning point doesn't have to be exactly at the waist though, it can vary slightly. Also, the 'fashion waist' of the coat will not necessarily always be at the same point as the actual waist of the wearer.

A touch of variance isn't too problematic. It's when you get fashionable types going 90s high or 80s low that people get confused.

My navel is right on top of my pubic bone and my jackets button an inch or so below it. That is normal, right?
