J. Press doesn't get mentioned here much, but I found myself somewhat alarmed when I discovered yesterday that it is no longer going to sell the classic candystripe OCBD. They could only find one left in stock and you can't even order one made-to-measure.

I haven't received my Mercer order yet, so I can't compare it to the J. Press OCBD. However, I think the Press oxford cloth is far superior to Brooks Brothers'--much beefier and softer.

If anyone wears a 15.5-inch collar with 32-inch sleeves, I suggest you call Press in NYC for that last blue candystripe OCBD.

So was I. I kept asking: "Really?" The salesperson was more than open about his contempt for the decision and the management's general direction of the company.

Fock me.... I had just decided to pull the plug and buy a few. When are they discontinuing it?

They're already discontinued. Once they sell what they have left, they're all gone.

There was a claim at AAAC that the flap pocket shirt was also to be discontinued. I don't know if it's true, but it sounds more likely in light of this.

With the new NYC design there was also talk that the new design was made with portability in mind, a design easily put in place in new stores. Maybe expansion is on the horizon and they are streamlining the offerings.

On the other hand, I have about 6 Press OCBDs (well, some are broadcloth, not OC) and only one is a stripe, so maybe they are not such big sellers. Hard to believe, though.

Why must I be wrong? Trust me, I asked enough, and was really eager to order some MTM. They're going to check to see if there's any leftover fabric at the factory for my specific request--but as a matter of policy, the shirts are no more.

The explanation was that the candystripe shirts don't sell well.

On a slight tangent. I have always loved how candid J. Press salesmen are with their customers.

Sounds like a shift towards more efficient inventory. I'm sure the solid whites and blues far outsell the candystripes.
