If you get them can you do a review on them. There was a thread on aaac if these were actual shell cordos or just referring to the color or some other part of a horse. Jcrew cs had no idea either.

I probably won't get them. They would likely be too wide for me anyway.

I am very interested in learning about these shoes. They seem still to be on sale and they claim to be 'cordovan leather' as distinguished from cordovan colored. If so, perhaps a good buy. Can anyone tell if they are goodyear or not? It says 'Italian made' -but I wonder where they got the shells from (?)

Any info would be appreciated.

I emailed j. crew and customer service responded that they are shell cordovan, not just cordovan in color. I'm still a little skeptical. I chose to pass because if you zoom in on the photo the construction looks kind of crappy.

Yeah- I saw Ron Rider say they are not shell either here or on AAAC and I would think that is definitive, but below is the response I got from j.crew

Cordovan meaning horse hide? Shell Cordovan like that manufactured by http://www.horween.com/?

Can you tell me where it was sourced--sorry, I just want to be sure of
what I am buying.

Thanks

J. Crew's response:

Hello XXXX:

I am happy to verify that our Gifford Cordovan Penny Loafers (#14635)
are indeed made of shell cordovan, a luxurious material renowned for its
wonderful feel and beautiful luster.

Please feel free to contact me with any additional questions.

Best,

I don't have an opinion on this one way or another, I'm just posting what they told me.
