I'm looking to buy my cousin a gift; he likes J crew, needs jeans, you get the picture. But I don't want to get him anything ******. opinions on the denim itselft?

p.s. - no other gift suggestions please, I've got something else lined up just in case.

Overpriced, but among the best of the mall brands. I still wouldn't ever buy it.

i agree about the overpriced thing and would just about never purchase at retail, but i quite like a lot of their recent stuff. it's slim (i would know, i'm short AND skinny), fabrics have been getting better (they actually advertise mills where some of the wools come from, irish linen, etc.), and especially at sale price, a really great pricepoint to mix & match your wardrobe.

I have plenty of older J Crew jeans which have held up well, but all of them look too baggy these days. The sizing is huge, so go down at least 2" in the waist size (or take your friend to try them on).

I would say wait for them to go on sale, but J Crew sales have been pretty sparse lately.

i just picked up a pair over the weekend. seem decent but like others have said, i would never pay full retail for them. the pair i bought were on super sale, i think i paid $22 for them. at that price, its hard to go wrong.

I'm specifically talking about the denim. In general, I mostly agree with you.

hows the quality of the actual denim? I've never actually tried on a pair myself.

edit: also, I still don't get the term 'Mall Brands.' I've seen Kiton at malls, but never a J.crew. Does it just mean mainstreamed overpriced stores that sell thier own product( A&F, Banana Republic, etc) or is it just anything you would find at a regular mall(number of brands at nordstroms, macys, etc)?

Apparently you've never been to an actual mall.

It's as if "a J. Crew" is some rare tropical bird...

I never have J. crew before too.

Is J crew any better than diesel for jeans? i know some of the other diesel stuff are pretty iffy, they just brand some stuff made in china or something...

Diesel is definitely better then J crew imho. To me J. crew is like another banana republic. I'd rarely ever pay full retail for their stuff but if it's at one of their outlets...and it's on sale then maybe.
