Thought it might be interesting to see what everyone's favorite quotes are, be they philosophical, humorous, political, or otherwise. Feel free to post why you like them as well. A little context is always good.

One of my favorites is by John Stuart Mill:

"It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied; better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied."

I like the notion that that there is a qualitative difference between higher and lower order pleasures.

Go!

"Sex without love is an empty, meaningless experience. But as empty, meaningless experiences go, it's one of the best."
Woody Allen

"Ending a sentence with a preposition is an error up with which I cannot put."
Winston Churchill

"The most persuasive argument against democracy is spending 15 minutes with the average voter."
Winston Churchill

Never wrestle with a pig...you'll both get dirty, but the pig will enjoy it.

more of aphorisms, but I still like them:

"The confidence of amateurs is the envy of professionals."

"Amateurs practice until they get it right. Professionals practice until they never get it wrong."

Thought is was "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." John Emerich Edward Dalberg-Acton. I believe this was also attributed to Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn in his novel One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich...
