Do not know what made me thinking of starting this thread...

The problem is defining "obscure." I mean, is Uriah Heep obscure? Moot the Hoople? Mountain?

Mountain was actually big for a year or two. I vote for Moby Grape.

Agreed and Uriah Heep was even bigger and for longer, but given the state of "classic rock" today, do they qualify as "obscure?"

What I enjoy is looking back at all the swapping around and reformulations that went on. Take Humble Pie for instance. Peter Frampton (not his first band, Steve Marriott (formerly Small Faces), bassist was formerly with Spooky Tooth. This sort of thing went on quite a bit, where one band would chart, break up, and new bands would form with various re-treads and chart again.

U2. I define "obscure" as "currently unpopular amongst the masses".

speaking of, would you consider buffalo springfield or blind faith obscure? if so, one of them might be my top spot for the category.

    america has some cool tunes.

lastly, was anyone in more bands/duos than eric clapton?

I quite like the zombies, I did not realize they would be considered obscure. I always thought they were pretty well-known.
