For all I know, I'm committing a grievous faux pas--and in my first post too! But I've bought some stuff from J. Peterman I liked and other things I was less impressed with. Has anyone here tried their khakis? They're not cheap, but sound serious, at least.

I love the writing and illos on the Peterman catalogue, but have heard mixed things about the quality of manufacture, and so have never ordered.

I am tickled by an aspiration-sell that is partially based on elegant prose. Whenever I look over their catalogues, I am, indeed, tempted to buy...

The Eddie Bauer khakis/chinos this year are superb (those from the past few years were a bit coarse) -- the cotton is silky smooth and the colors are subtle. Also, the Banana Republic has some good ones, especially the "Gavin" line.

What I like most is the price range: for $70 - 100 you could buy very sturdy, high quality khakis/chinos.

If wearing khaki's, please do so with an approiate (sp?) attire, like an English tweed jacket. The image of college frat jerks with their khakis is still fresh in my mind.

Hi guys, I've got a similar question. Im in dire need of a new pair of khakis (the current one's I have are either too baggy or in horribly GAPtacular). Im looking for something in a modern fit (read not baggy) and with a good smooth, soft feel. essentially i guess Im looking for something along the lines of a woolish quality but not neccessarily wool.

I looked at the Bill's kakhi site and did not like what I saw. Any other suggestions or are Jcrew, Banana and Brooks Brothers good starts?

Grimslade - If mentioning J. Peterman and khakis in the same breath is a faux pas, then we're both guilty. I purchased a pair of Peterman khakis a few years ago on eBay. The price ($10) was a major point in their favor but - at least in my experience - the cut and the fact that they've worn like iron are pluses in my book.

What is it that allows Bill's to "wear like iron" -- is it the construction, or the quality of the cotton? Is the cotton significantly heftier than the average khaki? And if so, how does that affect their comfort during the summer months?

If price is not of concern, burberry prorsum makes a great pair of flat front khaki pants. Last pair I saw in SAKS ran about 550 i think.

I have tried pretty much every maker of khakis and the best pair I have is a pair from Zegna, the cloth feels like cashmere, the fit is perfect and I got them online somewhere for a discount. I also have a lightweight, very lightweight, pair from Polo which are great summer khaki's. they are all flat front and I have a pair of J.Crew which I wear to work and are all frayed at the bottom and have lasted quite a while.
