It is the size of the sleeve that counts

I have been wearing suits for years and recently started buying Ralph Lauren Black Label. The sleeves on this suit are trimmer and more tapered than any other suit I have owned and I think it makes a huge difference in the silhouette.
Any suggestions of other brands that offer a trimmer sleeve?

"Really, though, a good tailor should be able to slim any sleeve."

I disagree, from my experience you can only tailor a sleeve very slightly because the shoulder remains the same. I recently brought back a jacket and had the sleeves taken out more because it threw off the balance and had too much of a chicken leg effect. I would add it's a lot like the chest, a very loose chest even with drastic waist slimming which will tighten the back and sides perfect, will still usually have too much in the chest. The foundation is the key, even after good tailoring.

On top of that I would say the shoulder slimness is more important than the sleeve, because that's where the line flows from. A slimmer shoulder with a sleeve cut wider can be tailored some, but a wide shoulder and the sleeve won't ever look right if brought in too much down the arm IMO.

This is only from my own evaluation on the jackets I've had work done on. I prefer a very tapered sleeve end to wrist, this is the only way it works.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
