Kind of a long shot here, but lots of "globetrotters" on here and maybe even some Turkish members.

I am attending a trade show in Istanbul later this year but the convention center (Tuyap Fair and Congress Centre) looks like it's way the hell out of town, e.g. 40 km at least. There is a Ramada hotel right there but it seems a shame to go all that way and not stay in the city. Is it practical to get back and forth from the convention ctr. to downtown Istanbul? Are taxis an option? How long would the ride be, and how much?

Thanks for any and all assistance.

D,

the city is huge, I've been to a few trade fairs in Istanbul, but I can't for the life of me remember where that convention center is. getting from downtown to either the airport or to the asia side in the morning takes at least an hour. I used to go to the Asia side alot, and the area around the Asia Marriott takes maybe 90 minutes during rush hour. on the other hand, getting 2 km in down town probrably takes 30 minutes in rush hour.

what you probrably don't want is to have to cross from europe to asia during rush hour, or vice versa, that can be rough.

that said - I love staying downtown, or in the older part of town, when I stay in Istanbul. there is a lot to do in the older part of town. I usually stay at the old hilton, there are two hiltons and a conrad in the same neighborhood, more or less. good views, good access to resteraunts and so on.

taxis are available, relativly cheap but the distances get big, I find my biggest expense after hotels in istanbul will usually be taxis.

hmmm, just looked at a map, I see where it is. this is pretty far out, although sort of going against traffic. you could stay out close there, and then maybe spend one day closer to town to see some stuff. I could get you some restaurant recommendations close to the fairground so that you could have a couple of good meals.

good luck
