My family had a dog (large, about 110lbs) who would hide and pant non-stop during storms.

No, my dog seems completely oblivious to storms, and we've had some rough ones lately.

I used to have a German Shepherd that was so frightened that she would get in the bath tub during a storm.

I worked at a hospital pharmacy on the peninsula (SF bay area) once that had an outpatient pharmacy as well. I once dispensed Buspar for a dog and asked why the dog was taking it. The owner said his dog was terrified of thunderstorms and would have been euthanized had it not been for medication. It was strange to me, because we rarely even get thunderstorms around here.

When we know there's gonna be a big storm we give our beagle acepromezone to calm her down. Half a tablet is usually good. Last night she was knackered off of it. It all started last year when a tornado tore down our street. That was an awesome display of nature.

My old dog wasn't afraid of anything...except thunder. The current one is about 7 and only recently became frightened. She now hides under the bed. That they are totally different breads leads me to think it may be common, although it might have something to do with me; I tend to hide under the covers myself during thunderstorms.

My dog isn't bothered by thunder, fireworks or gunshots. He's a trained field dog and gunfire is his cue to return and begin search and retrieve.

I don't have any of my own dogs, but at "home" I have three. Fourth of July, the beaches in Santa Cruz are like D-Day. Nobody dies (or hardly anybody) but a lot of ordinance is detonated. The dogs completely lose it. This has been true of all the dogs, since I was a baby. We have never had a dog who could take loud booms with equanimity.

Sorry to hear that nootje. But yes, 12 is a ripe age for any dog. Sounds like he had a good life! FWIW, my dog only became scared of thunderstorms lately; she's 8. She's also grown more attached to my dad and I.

Don't have a dog, but my cat doesn't seem to mind them.
