Well said. This forum died when they decided to monetize the hell out of it.
That ad linked in the OP truly is horrible. How hard to make one picture and then underneath it list the maker/details/sizes/price and repeat?
Instead you get like 10 pictures and then a wall of text underneath it.
Yes, you can use reasoning and such to decipher what is what but you also shouldn't have to.
I will agree with quite a few posts here that B & S is very difficult to use and search. This needs a major overhaul/new layout. It needs to be searchable and screenable for size, condition, etc. I would love to support more members who sell, just too difficult to find the stuff, it's all over the place.
I understand this - but the online menswear community has moved on so much since the early days too, and the fact parts of the site seem to resemble an online GQ may reflect as much about the membership demographic as anything else?
How is it monetized more? B&S, without getting into new v old format, is still self contained and you don't ever need to go there if you don't want to, and there have been affiliate threads and banner ads for forever
Several reasons for higher prices on B&S:
The world changed when the recession hit. It had a huge impact on the price of used clothing. People began to place a much higher value on quality fashion and classic apparel. It isn't just on Styleforum lads, it is everywhere. Just look at the crazy prices women pay for used LV purses today verses a few years ago. Used Lobb shoes today are easily 2x what they were a few years ago on eBay.
Fashion prices have been climbing for luxury brands. A heavy Loro Piana cashmere sweater from 2 years ago might have been $1,500-$1800 where as today it is $3K. That has an impact on the used market. The prices for used or NWT cashmere luxury brands is way higher on eBay, B&S, everywhere...
Since the recession, most manufacturers and retailers have cut inventory of premium products. There are far less items to close-out at killer prices as in 2008. I don't mean regular 30% off prices I mean liquidation prices at a fraction of their original prices. There just isn't that much any more of the good stuff to liquidate.
If retailers feel they have surplus of luxury goods, they are cutting prices earlier in the season (such as pre-Thanksgiving this year) to be sure that if they discount it is only 20-30% and not the deeper sale prices.
All of this means that there are fewer guys getting true closeout prices that they can buy and flip here on B&S. There are some, but they are rare.
I think B&S would be greatly improved with a specific search function for brands, size, etc......
I PM'd Onix about bringing back Fit is King, but it looks like he hasn't logged in in months. Anyone have his contact info by chance?
Be specific, what do you want?
I think there have been some very good suggestions so far, but off the top of my head to improve the B&S section I would implement the following:
Improved search function by brand and size - as on eBay
Searchable also by location - be that USA/EU/AUS etc.
There should be separate forums for used items and BNWT, items such as a $15 used Brooks Brothers shirt shouldn't be in listed next to a pair of BNIB John Lobbs and in my opinion the site is getting clogged with things no-one actually wants to buy
As a seller I'd like to see a limit the amount of threads bumpable in a certain amount of time - one of the most annoying things as a seller is PAYING to bump your item every now and then to get a member who doesn't pay bump fifteen threads in one go to massively move your item(s) down the front page
Merit bumping should seriously be reconsidered in some form or the other, the current B&S is a very soulless affair
Ich makes a good point about adding a search feature with filters
-NWT vs NWOT vs used
-Country where item is located (customs concerns)
Merit bumping probably isn't coming back. Too taxing on the mods. But a better filter sounds in order
Very good suggestions.
I would suggest PMing LA Guy with these suggestions. I would also suggest that you ask as many of your fellow B&S buyers and sellers as possible to do the same. The more people he hears from the more likely some of these might happen.
That would fix a beef I've had with B&S for ages. I just got sick of reading through ads, getting interested, only to find that the seller refuses to sell outside the USA. After a while, I just tuned out.
I have never had any success selling on B&S either, with the exception of some charity sales I ran. They created a lot of interest, but only because I was knocking stuff out at thrift store prices and taking a loss, for the charity. I've had virtually no luck selling stuff when I had any expectation of even a small profit. People just have ridiculous expectations of what something is worth.
I was once very active there, and probably bought thousands of dollars worth of stuff from various sellers, but I don't even bother looking any more. Both as a seller and a buyer, B&S offers me pretty much nothing.
Once you revamp quality over quantity, there's little else to buy.
I have pretty much everything I want.
Seems to be the general consensus which needs to be remedied.
