I'm going to a formal event soon, and I was wondering if this tuxedo is suitable:

Black shirt, white vest, black jacket, white tie, black pants

Is that alright/attractive?

I don't see the picture, but only a tails should be worn white bow tie. Thats why there's white and black tie events. Just my .02.

I'm not seeing that picture either. The black shirt is rather untraditional, but being that I can see the picture I can give my opinion on if it works for you or not. Also what is the dress code on the invitation? White tie? Black tie?

No. You should wear a white formal shirt (straight collar, NOT wing collar) and a black bow tie.

Under no circumstances should you ever wear a black shirt for any occasion that's even remotely dressy, and certainly not for a formal occasion. Ever. Celebrities can't dress. Ignore them. Black shirts should be worn strictly with an open collar, for your hipster's night on the town. Yes, you can find black 'formal' shirts, but... you really shouldn't be able to.

And never, ever wear a white bow tie with anything but formal dress white tie. Meaning formal dress white tie. You won't have to guess when this is called for -- it will be indicated on the invitation. For example, when you are awarded the Nobel Prize.

Depending on the event, if you absolutely insist on looking edgy, updated and cool (which I would very, very strongly advise against), instead of the bowtie, you could wear a solid black silk necktie (i.e., a 'long tie') with the white formal shirt. But don't.

But that's just my take on it. Whatever you need to know about formal dressing has been said before on this forum, and by people who know far more than I do. This post is just one example. Actually, you would probably find the entire thread to be quite useful. There are plenty of other references and debates available here if you use the search function.

Agree completely. Stick with the black bow tie, white laydown shirt, low cut vest or cumberbund that is black, and a black tuxedo. I doubt it will be white tie event because they are so rare. If you want to wear "white tie" at a black tie you can, but it is not suggested because your be better dressed than the host or anyone there. I maybe would, just because I love tails so much, but I still don't suggest it. Please don't wear a neck tie like those movie stars. Remember you don't have to follow my advice, do what you think looks good on you. I just go to a bit of Formal events in the evening.
