Is this the right way to slim down a dress shirt?

I have a dress shirt that is too big in the chest/waist area and the sleeves. If I take it in by removing the red parts is that the right way to slim down the shirt? I have a sewing machine and can do the modification myself.

Back darts a better place to start maybe? Darts wont help with the sleeve problem though.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. There was nother post here detailing how to do it properly with a flat-felled seam, if you don't know already. You'll have to search for it.

I've occasionally wondered this when looking a few of my shirts I don't really wear because of a more relaxed fit. It probably could work if you're really good on the sewing machine but I'd imagine it'd get pretty fiddly when you got up near the arm-holes most likely. An easier way to slim it down if its mainly the torso section that's too loose would be to dart it in the back - basically just a straight line of stitching then cutting off the excess fabric.

The armhole seams might be tricky to feed through a poor machine on the second pass, if it's a thicker fabric, but you should be able to do it if you use a wide enough seam. 1/4" finish is what a lot of better makers use, rather than the super-narrow, rolled-up side-seams you sometimes see on mass-manufactured shirts.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
