Black is black. A unique description so whilst they are different shades of black (yes really, as with white).

You will find few supporters of black here and, equally, if you had taken the trouble to research the substance of your question here, you would not be speaking of black for your first suit - unless of course you are a trainee undertaker.

Stick with the basics, mid-grey, navy/midnight blue etc and forget silly notions of black.

Do you think the suit in the link is a shade of black then? Supposedly it's blue-black just on the dark side. That's what my question is about: I do know black suits won't on a business setting save for some exceptions.

When you go looking to buy a suit, wear a proper shirt! Not a polo shirt/tee shirt/etc. Geez.

Either a Black suit works for you, or it doesn't.

Some here simply can't pull it off. and that's fine. but do as the above post says. and wear a nice shirt when you try on stuff.
Try everything on. and, IMHO, a Blue suit would work better as a starting point. or a gray flannel. something in a Medium blue?
with a crisp white shirt and Burgandy tie. you can even wear your Oxblood shoes with described fit.

Black suits are THE staple in Japan. and most of Asia, Russia, several other European countries,etc..
so regardless if a few fanatics on a website deem the Black suit "not hip". i will simply say that these regions have more experience with the black suit. they know how to tune one black suit to multiple occasions. multiple functions, and persona's.

It is not something to jump in to as a beginner. and while it can be done, the degree of difficulty is high. so as a random person on the internet, i advise you to look at other options.

Thanks for the advice. I was hoping someone would say "This is not a black suit, this is just a dark shade of blue (e.g. in comparison to the suit label in the pic which is actually black). I insisted on this suit because it has a good combination of fit/material/price but oh well, guess i'll head off toe bluer or grayer pastures!

I'm sorry the comments haven't been more helpful to you. I think the phrase "too black" might have caused a little confusion.

I can't tell from the pic whether it is black or a very dark midnight blue. If you have decided you don't want to make the purchase if it is black, I'd suggest carrying in something you are sure is black and compare.

If the question were "I've found a dark midnight blue suit. Is it too dark for business?" You might get more helpful responses. I have a midnight Oxxford suit often mistaken for black. I think it's "highest and best use" is for after work events but I've worn it to work some and I think it's fine.
