Hi all. I bought these brand new cheaney shoes on ebay. On the box it says handwritten with a marker "horse" and the seller sold them brand new as being shell cordovan for 100 dollars. But i am not sure, i dont think it is shell cordovan, it looks different then shell cordovan because u see mirco creases i think. Have i been tricked?

Those are not shell cordovan, though they could be horsehide since shell cordovan is a specific part of the horse. Alternatively, the term "cordovan" can also refer to the color. No matter, I think Cheaney has only produced a couple of models in shell cordovan lately.

Thank you for responding so swiftly. How can i find out if it is horse of kalf? Because the price was so low i am not angry or upset if its not horse but my main concern is taking care of the shoes. I use Saphir only and i need to know if I need to use their Horse line without terpentine for these or the normal kalfskin line. The normal polish with terpentine is said to damage horse leather?

Maybe "Horse" is the same as what Crockett and Jones call "Cavalry Calf", ie corrected grain. However, these certainly do not look like shell cordovan.

The leather feels very soft and supple, maybe its just kalfskin then. Saw some real shell cordovan shoes todat, noticiable difference indeed.
