I didn't even know someone can drive in the US with a Canadian driver license. Is this a special situation for Canadians or does same apply to any foreign driver license?Originally Posted by bkstone

I drive in just about every country in Europe ... and have only a Washington State driver's license. I also have something known as an 'international driver's permit' ... but it was provided locally by AAA (the American Automobile Association). The only official license is that of Washington.

It is a way to ensure the traffic fine is paid. The whole, "lucky to not be going to jail" thing is a little over the top but all in all can be true.
Local police officers here in south Texas often take Mexican visitors straight to court to have their fine paid because they know if they don't the person will just cross back into Mexico and the fine will never get paid.
