Just like elbow patches, I am wondering if a shoulder patch is something I should consider getting for a casual jacket. I think it looks kinda cool. Thoughts?

It's really cool. If you're going shooting.

Precisely what I was going to say. I wonder if his jacket actually has padding under that shoulder patch.

I think it looks great, but you'd have to be pretty comfortable wearing it for fashion's sake rather than going by traditional rules of style. In other words, you have to be fly. Like Denzel.

I didn't even realize it was Denzel, so distracted was I by his huge patch of shoulder leather. Not a desirable outcome, in my book.

If I saw someone with enough style to wear that around here, I would be very pleased.

I would be more pleased if it were me who had the coat, though.

Back in the day, gangsters wore shooting jackets because it was the appropriate thing to wear in a drive-by or if you're involved in a shoot-out with the constables. And it has gone downhill eversince.

Just curious but what's the difference between affectation and style? For the longest time I thought pocket squares were affectation; same for loud plaid fabrics. Now I see pretty much everything as simply style choices. FWIW, I don't like the jacket either.

Some definitions might help.

Conspicuous artificiality of manner or appearance; effort to attract notice by pretense, assumption, or any assumed peculiarity.

Behavior that is assumed rather than natural; artificiality.

An affectation is artificial behavior, often adopted in imitation of someone, that is perceived as being unnatural.

Wearing a jacket designed for shooting sports when you're not shooting would seem an affectation. I'd say carrying a cane when you don't need the support of one is another common example.

Pocket squares and loud plaids? I don't see how that is artificial or unnatural.
