ok, see how we go....

my right eye is and always has been really bad, so got glasses yesterday. in true vietnam fashion, no prescription, just a test and the guy walked away and made me glasses. i dont know what my prescription is, but he gave me magnification level 14 - which is really really thick and looks ridiculous versus my perfect vision left eye.

so two questions

1. how long will i have watery eyes and headaches as i get acclimatised to glasses

2. these lenses are about 7mm thick, i suspect lens technology is MILES behind the world in vietnam, so was wondering if anyone knew how thin these 14 magnification lenses could be if i shopped around elsewhere

That's a lot for a first pair of glasses. Did you procrastinate for years?

not really, its a long story. Basically I have a cornea condition that cant be cured. On day to day basis, it in the past hadnt caused me many problems since it is only in one eye, the other eye is perfect. Basically Id need some custom engineered hard contact custom made for my cornea to get substantial improvement. Optometrists in Australia and US basically said "let it be unless your left eye starts to go" Left eye still fine, but recently started to get headaches and an ache behind eye, so time to rectify. Visit VNese optometrist, he says "put on glasses" and hands them over.

Okay,

We don't know your age, so that might be a factor with your glasses. But, anyways, this is what I remember from all the spiels my optometrist tells me:

Its going to take about a week or two for you to get acclimated to glasses. Maybe, you could wear them for truncated periods in the beginning, and wear them longer as you time passes. If you're still having problems, then you should go see optometrist again. Not to sound racist, but I don't know what the qualifications of optometrists in Vietnam are like- do they need to go to school for that in Vietnam?

In your special case, you might want to wait till you return to Australlia or America for your special needs.

There's a lot of different materials out there which has have different thicknesses and weights. The thinner and lighter ones are more expensive, and it might be more important to get the right prescription. These lens can be a big difference. You could try wearing glasses where one of the lens is that special thickness and the other lens is normal.

I have a friend who has corneal problems where the cornea is elongating with time. In that case, he needed special hard contact lens since it helped control the growth. The problem is that they're really hard to prescribe, and most optometrists are reluctant to do them. You might try looking for a specialist in that who might be able to give you a better or maybe even more honest answer.

working thru this....

im 29

yeah thats basically what i have been doing - just wearing them for sort 15, 20 mins as i going about my usuals...then taking them off.

do you think its a good idea to go back to the opto and ask for a lower lens grade just while i get used to them...get say a 4...then an 8, work my way up to the necessary 14 - which as alchem noted, is a pretty massive lens as a first up.

cost not really a concern

but I don't know what the qualifications of optometrists in Vietnam are like- do they need to go to school for that in Vietnam?

judging by this guy, Id say no, but really couldnt be sure. hard to figure anything out in this country, and you can always pay off a teacher if you want a diploma.

In your special case, you might want to wait till you return to Australlia or America for your special needs

thats basically the plan - just want something to tide me over, quite possible I wont be back in Australia til Christmas at best.

any you can recommend?

yeah thats basically what I have been through in the past - and both the Australian and American doctor said "too tricky, too messy, if it not killing you, then live with it" - and I have til now when i thought maybe a good time to jump to marginal improvement of glasses.

I thought you were older gentlemen since you used the term magnification 14. I thought you were talking about reading glasses. I'm assuming you're near sighted, right?

But, if the mag is referring to the power, then something that big sounds too much if these are your first glasses. I'd do what Alchimiste suggested and getting weaker glasses first before wearing mag 14. That might be why you're getting the headaches. I would also hypothesize that the different lens you need for each eye might also be an issue as well. Your eyes sound too complicated for just an amateur in Vietnam. Can you order the lens to be sent to this opt. in Vietnam? Is there a opt. school in Vietnam? They might be able to give you the best glasses considering your limited oppurtunities.

Probably best to go to a specialist. Once you go to a specialist, they'll be able to determine what's the best type of lens for you. I use polycarb which is lighter and also thinner than regular glass and plastic. Its also harder to shatter. But, maybe for your special needs, you might need something even more exotic. I've also heard about aspheric lens, but they are very expensive.

Too bad about your experiences with opt. in america or australlia. It sounds like it was too much hassle for them to deal with.

wow everyone on this thread things im aging. My 29th bday is July 10 and I am going to cling to each of the 365 days that keeps me south of thirty. thirty. ****. *shudder*

let me demonstrate how near sighted (and the diff these glasses have made)... i have a copy of the Da Vinci Code with this cover....
0552149519.09.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
with no glasses (and left eye covered) I have to hold the cover 2.25 inches from my face to read the word "Brown". With the 14 mags on I can read it at arms length (slightly blurry) Pretty bad huh?

yeah im thinking that may be a good idea, work my way up to the level that i need over a few months. Get some 4s...keep them a month...get some 6s etc, work up to 14 My left eye is perfect as I said btw, so its not like I am blind and useless - more an aggravation than an impairment. I think (based on no knowledge at all) that Im really messing with my sense of balance having lived with this problem for so long and then suddenly bringing in the 7mm guns to solve it. Another reason to progress thru a few lenses to get back to these thick things
Your eyes sound too complicated for just an amateur in Vietnam. Can you order the lens to be sent to this opt. in Vietnam?
oh no doubt - byt my eye is too complicated to be solved by professionals in developed countries who pissfart about and then dont solve it - one of the upsides of vietnam is if you give the guy $30 he provides something of a solution on the spot. Not like he can make it much worse that it is now - its already useless.

think i can buy on ebay at 14 mag with no prescription?

do you have astigmatism? that's what really messes up my vision, and not just the whole nearsighted thing.

if you've gone to see opt. in australia and america, can't you request your prescription and then use that to get the glasses you need? you'll need to know your prescription first before you can try looking for anything from ebay or the internet. i'd feel a lot safer using a professional's prescription, which would probably account for the imbalance with your eyes. the last thing you want to do now is to get these crappy glasses from vietnam from a hack off the streets that messes up your eyes even more.

unfortunatley, you might be right about waiting too long to get help. i find it strange that nobody was able to help you earlier, or at least send you to a specialist. probably, didn't want to lose you to a competitor cause why go back to the first opt. i remeber in one of my college classes where we learned about animal's brains being hardwired by a certain age. once past that critical period, you couldn't change their hardwiring. i would suspect that despite the best possible care, your options might be limited.

the cornea thing sounds really serious. have you ever googled it up to find more information about it? that's probably going to be more helpful and accurate than some anonymous stranger on a clothing forum.

i've never heard of mag 14. but, if you're as nearsighted as your example, we might be talking about a big adjustment for your glasses. i was actually thinking you might need several months for each pair of glasses before you moved on to the next pair. that's what i needed to do when i got my first pair.

nah its not astigmatism.

they never prescribed anything for me originally - basically dismissed it as pointless.

was kinda curious to see if, in among the 3000 odd SF members there was an optometrist in our ranks that could give me some pointers.

btw - the US and AU optos did bounce me around among specialists, it was the specialists who said dont worry about it, get on with ur life
