A trade as an occupation usually refers to the profession that require some particular kind of skilled work. In historical sense, particularly as pertinent to the Medieval history and earlier, the term is usually applied towards people occupied in most kinds of crafts and small-scale production of goods.

from wiki.
i would agree, same as a jeweller, carpenter etc.

Professions are usually regulated by a professional body with licensing and competency testing. Also, there is usually formal education involved (usually quite long too). It is not a profession.

Papa said being a Tailor is a profession, and an art form. So, yeah it's a profession!

I was always led to believe that trades were the result of apprenticeships and professions were the result of university degrees. Probably an oversimplification, but that makes tailors tradesmen by definition.

To be a professional is to be one who belongs to a learned profession requiring an advanced education. The three original professions being medicine, theology and law; their business dealing in knowledge.

Tailors are tradesmen; their business dealing in making things. But to say that being a master of ones trade precludes one from being creative, or even artistic in their chosen trade is incorrect.

But what's the point of the distinction nowadays anyways?
