Is Salvatore Ambrosi Still Alive?

I wonder if any of you have had difficulty reaching Salvatore. My 4 new pairs of pants (which I ordered and paid for last spring) have been "lost in the mail" since mid-September. Salvatore won't confirm the shipping address, provide any tracking details -- or even reply to numerous e-mails and Facebook messages. It's very disappointing since I have been a loyal customer for years. I've visited him and his father in Napoli many times, and we've shared dinners together several times in NY (Solito as well).

I understand Salvatore's an artisan and his work is great, so I don't mind so much when linen pants promised for summer don't ship till the fall. And apparently Salvatore was ill. But when the pants themselves go missing and the tailor blatantly ignores your request for any follow-up -- well, that's pretty lousy. Does anyone have any suggestions? Help!!! Thanks....

I know he is alive because I have heard from him recently but don't know more than that.

I am going there next week and will (or should) see him in person.

Maybe he's on the beach, sipping pina coladas with Darren and Chuck?

Thanks very much. I actually just got a Facebook invite, too. So much as I hate to think it, given the many unanswered messages (including Facebook) that I think he's just blown me off rather than help find the shipment or compromise in some way to replace the lost pants. (Who should be responsible in such a case -- esp with no tracking, no shipment receipt? He didn't even confirm my address before shipping, and I'd always picked up from him in the past.)

I do think that trust is big deal when you're a traveling tailor who needs to be paid up-front (and in cash). Mostly, I consider Salvatore a friend, so I hope he will ultimately come through.

I'm starting a service where I will underwrite all your overseas bespoke commissions for 10% of the total value. Who's in?

Sorry, but is this a typical arrangement for travelling tailors?

I'm really surprised that people are willing to do this....

I'll do it for 15%. This will be the luxury alternative to your service, for subscribers to The Rake, Tweed in the City followers, and Allen-Edmonds firsts owners.

I'll do it for 20% with an option to put the goods back to you should they become finished at 110% of their original euro value.

I suggest a surcharge for coverage of such items as lining color wrong, divots, sleeve pitch off, and the more vague but know it when you see "looks a bit too Asian."

What commodity hedge are you using? I think that traveling tailor usage contraindicates barley.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
