Is MTM an option for me?

Hello gentlemen,

I’ve been looking into MTM suits, jackets, and shirts and if they will work for me. Obviously, nothing is better than bespoke in terms of fitting, but it’s not within my current budget taking time off work to do my post grad business school. I’ve had a few cheap ones made in Asia that fits well and even has good fabric but are missing the finer details you would see in 2-5k bespoke suits

I’m very active, I’m a fighter and I worked in fitness running a gym and organizing a professional MMA organization. So naturally, I’m pretty fit and have a decently muscular frame. I’m certainly not a bodybuilder or anything, but as you can see from the pictures, my frame and my 6’3 189cm height makes OTR impossible. Even with tailoring done it just is too off.

So do you guys think MTM will give me a chance without having to go into the bespoke price range? I’m worried I’ll be wasting money on another suit above OTR price range for something that just looks off.

I think so... MTM should work but do research on who you will use. I have had already a few bad experiences. Don't assume what any normal person would think. They advertise MTM so they should know what they are doing. Especially most salespeople in the US are incompetent and don't know how to correctly measure you. I have heard people here say to go to a good tailor and pay for measurements. Im not sure if this works but sounds better than the idiotic salespeople I interacted with.

I'm moving to London and I think they will have more experienced people. I saw this place, editsuits.com but I don't know much else about them. Their prices are good, seem to use some good fabric, and has a guarantee to satisfaction fit.

Anyone used or heard of Edit Suits?

London should have plenty of options available nevertheless do your research. Unfortunately I have not heard of edit suits. What's your budget?

I was hoping to get 5 shirts done for less than $150. 3 Jackets done for under $650 each. And 3 pairs of trousers done for under 150 each. And probably 1 business suit under $800.

I wonder if I can get some sort of discount if I get so many things...maybe smaller places are willing to give me a little discount for a big order? I need a more business casual wardrobe, I worked in fitness and I have 1 business suit I wear once in a blue moon for events and most of my clothes are sporty due to it being hot and humid where I live and the nature of my work.

I honestly doubt you will get decent MTM at this budget. Stick with suit supply and charles thyrwitt shirts.

I would try and see some real life examples but usually if MTM is too cheap the results here look pretty bad. The only exception is a Canadian brand called Spier Mackay - 1 suit MTM goes for like $800 or so.

I would be wary of any online-only operation with proportions like yours - I think you're going to want to talk with someone who can measure you in person and recommend the best fit. MTM blocks only have so much leeway - if you're too different from the "average" body type, it's going to come out weird.

What exactly are your dimensions? Chest, shoulders, waist, thighs, hips etc.

At your price range you’ll only be opening yourself up for headaches. Trust me.

I don’t know editsuits.com. But I do know tons of other places like it. It’s a showroom. They’ll take your measurements and likely send it off to a SE Asia factory which will make the garment, send it back and final alterations are done there. At those prices, it’s likely what happens, but I could be wrong.

Odds are the person measuring and the person(s) making the garment don’t even communicating. I fact, I think it’s better to call it made to order rather than made to measure.

Not sure. I rarely wear anything formal as where I live in Taiwan for work is hot and humid 9 months of a year so no one wears suits normally unless you’re a business executive doing dinner with clients.

Any recommendations in London? I will look into it. I’m not expecting a perfect fit with the highest craftsmanship with all the minor details. Just decent fabrics that’s put together in a way that you won’t look cheap and something that will fit to my proportions.

I’m just a post grad Business student, going for junior positions. I don’t need to look like an executive with the finest bespoke suits. Most of my wear will be business casual to classes and around the city. And of course 1 formal business suits for major networking events and interviews. Maybe I will get a bespoke business suit. I think sports jackets and shirts are more forgiving in terms of perfect fit, sports jackets naturally aren’t as fitted to the body as suits.
