Hi guys.

So I'm 21 (22 this year), finished uni and just started a 'real' job. I am currently living at home with my parents and brothers as it isn't necessary for me to move our yet. I dont want to rent a place as I dont like the idea of pay for someone elses home. By the end of the year I will have enough money to put down as a deposit for my first place, but the problem is, I also want to spend around 6 months to maybe even a year travelling somewhere ( Im thinking of SE Asia) by 2016. So this is my dilemma. Any advice?

Buy a place that is easily to rent (downtown, near the beach, near a uni, etc).

Take your year off, and rent your place out. Don't put too much work into it, don't buy new appliances. If you are friendly with any of your old teachers, you can always contact them about finding maybe a Ph.D. student, or travelling faculty to rent your place for the year.

And dude .. why take a year off to travel SE Asia .. you pretty much live in SE Asia. I knew a guy who lived in Brisbane, worked as a roughneck (company flew him in/out of the oilfields) .. and when he got time off he'd fly to Thailand and ****, then fly back to work.

If you're going to take a year off .. make it worth your time. Head to Europe, or NA. Don't go somewhere that you can go for the weekend if you wanted.

Stay at home and save money. Go travel for a year. Buy house when you return.
