Yes.

But if you don't feel comfortable wearing it, then you won't look comfortable wearing it, and it probably won't end up looking too good.

A good rule-of-thumb when mixing patterns is to use very different sizes. If you have a thinly striped shirt with a large patterned tie or vice-versa then you should be fine.

Where people get into trouble is having two similarly sized patterns.

make sure the scales or the check and stripe are not close to each other. and make them colors that don't clash

I think if it's something like a micro check, or a very thin windowpane combined with a very broad striped tie it could look great, depending on the colors. I can think of some combinations of very narrow stripes and small checks that would look terrible, though.

^^ What he said. Go for patterns of differing scales. There's a bunch of info on this site (as well as AAAC, I believe) on pattern matching if you have the patience for doing some reading.

I can see how a small gingham can work with larger scale stripes. Its looks from a distance that you are wearing a single coloured shirt.

Its when the checks are larger that I can't see. Do the tie's checks have to be larger in scale to the stripes of the tie or can the tie's stripes be smaller than the shirt's checks?

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
