Is it common to haver a leather panel or stone panel over table desktop?

I don't see this anymore but I imagine it was quite common back in the days. Why? My current table is nice but not rare antique so I don't have much grief should I mar the surface by accident. Besides surface protection, I can't think of any other reasons.

Many woods are not such great writing surfaces.

A ballpoint pen through a piece of paper will leave marks behind on a lot of desks so naturaly you would want to protect it. The leather I think comes down to people who like the feel of a forgiving surface to write on (think about writing on a notebook vs a sheet of paper on a formica surface) and the luxury appearance of leather.
